Now, we’re excited to share that they have a housing development in the works, displaying our Collections, once again! Additionally, they gave us the inside scoop on current design trends they’re loving, where they get their inspiration, and a few tips for homeowners looking to upgrade their spaces. The Finished Space: Can you tell us a little about Classic Cottages and the company’s history?
Classic Cottages: Classic Cottages, LLC is an experienced Virginia based Real Estate, Design and Construction firm that specializes in custom home building in Northern Virginia. Our primary market for building is Arlington County. However, we are active in Alexandria, McLean, Vienna, and the city of Falls Church as well. With our skilled team and expertise behind each home, we continue to grow throughout the Northern Virginia area.
Since our founding over seven years ago, we have built an extensive portfolio of completed projects that includes the construction and sale of over 90 homes. Our history shows that we complete all of our projects in a timely manner and with consistent quality. We maintain a diversified portfolio of new home locations. This consistent proprietary pipeline of property lots can be made available to our clients who choose to pursue a Design+Build home.
TFS: Tell us more about your homes and developments.
CC: The majority of our homes are in North Arlington. Most of our projects are purchasing an existing home on a lot built in the 1930s-1950s range, knocking it down, and building a new home. More than 50% of our homes are sold before completion, which allows our clients to work with our talented design team to personalize the home and make finishing selections.
In addition to the single knock-down and rebuilds, we are underway with two single-family developments now in Arlington. The first one is an 8 unit project, Abingdon Estates, in the Ballston area of Arlington, with the first deliveries set to take place in February 2018. The other development project, with deliveries later in 2018, is nine single-family homes next to the East Falls Church Metro, Roosevelt Place.
TFS: Tell us more about the Abingdon Estates development.
CC: We are thrilled to be unveiling our newest development project, Abingdon Estates at Ballston. Much thought has been put into the design of these eight single-family homes. Being well versed in the style trends of the region, our design team has selected three distinct looks that provide a modern spin on timeless design qualities.
The Fashion Forward and Very Square Collections are ones you will surely see in Abingdon Estates. We feel the Fashion Forward Collection provides the classic simplicity that we think will beautifully enhance the selections made throughout our transitional palette of finishes. The modern farmhouse palette will boast the more rigid and modest angles needed to carry out this trending style.
TFS: What drew you to Metrie and our Then & Now Finishing Collections?
CC: Metrie does a great job of staying on trend with their offerings. Given the variety of styles and profiles, it is so nice to be able to make a statement with trim. From bold and masculine to soft and simple, Metrie gives a diversity in options which is so nice to have access to.
TFS: How do you ‘Finish before you start’ in your homes and developments?
CC: This is a great motto, and one we take into consideration as we design each home. It is great to know the end goal for the home prior to making any selections. With this method, each choice you make can be determined based on its ability to fit within the predefined style goal.
TFS: What’s one interior finishing upgrade that you love seeing?
CC: We love the look of coffered ceilings. They quickly upgrade a space from typical to grand. Many of our great rooms boast this beautiful feature, and while we’d hate to be limited to only one choice in interior finishing upgrades, this one would likely win if we were required to choose.
TFS: Why should homeowners consider upgrading their trim and door packages?
CC: Clean, stylish trim is a simple way to quickly upgrade the look in much of your home. The same goes for doors. Combining fresh trim and doors with fresh paint on the walls will quickly transform a space from feeling bland and outdated to feeling upscale and interesting.
TFS: What advice do you have for homeowners who are looking to upgrade interior finishings in their new home?
CC: Seek the advice of a professional. Design professionals have the know-how and knowledge to help you achieve upgraded finishings that you may not have otherwise thought of. There are so many ways to achieve upgraded looks using trim, and having guidance in those selections can make it seem far less overwhelming.
TFS: What design trends are you noticing right now in Northern Virginia? What about trim trends?
CC: The world of design is constantly evolving, and we see to it that we stay on top of trends. We are beginning to see the emergence of some fun new color pallets in homes. Deep greens and rose tones are beginning to find their way onto the scene. Gray and mushroom tones are also quite popular in wood finishing for floors and cabinetry. Clean, linear looks are also in high demand. This can be accomplished using the right trim. Taller baseboard heights and more substantial crown and trim are commonly seen in the selection processes.
TFS: Where do you look for trimspiration?
CC: We live in an age where the World Wide Web gives us access to an endless supply of inspiration. Between Houzz and Pinterest, we can find so many fantastic looks. We also find attending trade shows and design seminars crucial to knowing both where trends stand, and where they are forecasted to move in the near future.
TFS: How can people go about purchasing one of your homes?
CC: Any interested home buyers can work with our Sales team to learn about our different custom home options. We have available spec homes for immediate delivery as well as available lots for sale that buyers can choose to build a custom home on. We can also work with our Acquisitions Manager to find a lot that meets our client’s wants and needs.
